Red raspberry leaf scientifically known as Rubus idaeustea is the leaf of the raspberry vine that has been dried. The leaves hold many medicinal qualities which have been used to benefit wellbeing over centuries. Midwives have used this wonderful red raspberry leaf herbal tea to induce labour. The leaf contains fragarine which is known to help tone and tighten the uterine and pelvic muscles which can induce labour. Fragarine and the anti-inflammatory properties of the red raspberry leaf can help with menstrual cramping, heavy bleeding and stomach discomfort such as bloating that can be experienced during this time of mense.
Red raspberry leaf in ancient herbal knowledge has increased fertility as it balances hormones in both males and females. For men, it is thought to detoxify excess oestrogen and promote testosterone.
With its anti-inflammatory properties, red raspberry leaf can be great for reducing headaches, arthritis and reducing fever.
Red raspberry leaf has an array of vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, manganese, iron, potassium & calcium. Vitamins include a good source of vitamin A, C & E.
Raspberry leaf can be drying to the body so use in moderation and sporadically, mixed with demulcent herbs such as marshmallow this can help. It is not recommended to use Red Raspberry Leaf Tea until late in the third trimester because it can induce labour.
To make tea, add one teaspoon of red raspberry leaf to a tea infuser, pour over 80-degree hot water (just under boiling) then steep for at least 5 minutes. 1 to 3 cups are recommended throughout the day.
