Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy for IBS
Calm Your Gut. Calm Your Mind. Reclaim Your Life.
Living with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can affect every part of your life. It isn’t just the bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhoea or constipation. It’s worrying about where the nearest bathroom is, avoiding social occasions, feeling anxious before travelling, and constantly wondering when your next flare-up will occur.
If you’ve tried diets, supplements or medications with limited success, you’re not alone.
While these approaches can be helpful, they often don’t address one of the most important causes of IBS — the communication between your brain and your gut.
Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy is one of the most scientifically researched, evidence-based treatments available for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Rather than simply managing symptoms, it helps retrain the communication between your brain and digestive system, allowing your gut to become calmer, less sensitive and better regulated. What is IBS?
IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is now recognised as a Disorder of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI).
This means there is a disruption in the communication between your brain, nervous system and digestive tract. The bowel becomes hypersensitive, causing normal digestive sensations to be interpreted as pain or discomfort.
IBS symptoms may include:
• Abdominal pain and cramping
• Bloating
• Excessive gas
• Diarrhoea
• Constipation
• Alternating diarrhoea and constipation
• Urgency
• Food-related anxiety
• Fear of travelling or eating out
IBS is very real. It is not “all in your head.” However, the brain and gut are constantly communicating, and when this communication becomes dysregulated, symptoms can become more severe.
The Science Behind Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy
Your digestive system contains more than 100 million nerve cells, known as the Enteric Nervous System — often referred to as your body’s “second brain.”
The brain and gut communicate continuously through a network known as the Gut-Brain Axis.
When this communication becomes disrupted, the nervous system can remain on high alert, making the gut more sensitive to normal digestive processes. This may contribute to pain, bloating, altered bowel habits and ongoing IBS symptoms.
Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy works by helping regulate this communication.
During hypnosis you remain relaxed, aware and completely in control. Your mind enters a focused state that allows positive therapeutic suggestions to help reduce gut hypersensitivity, calm the nervous system and encourage healthier digestive function.
Clinical research spanning more than 40 years has shown that Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy can significantly improve IBS symptoms in many people. Across multiple clinical studies, approximately 70–80% of appropriately selected participants experienced meaningful improvements in their symptoms.
